UNDERSTANDING

INDIGENOUS FOOD SYSTEMS

Understanding an Indigenous Food System is more than just learning and cooking with wild foods and game.  There are many foundational understandings that make up the food system as a whole.  We built this Indigenous Food System Map to help illustrate all of the important groundwork that makes up the knowledge as a whole, knowledge that has been passed down for millennia and is unique to every region, culture, and history.  Our focus has turned to understanding the Indigenous Foods Systems of all of North America from Mexico to Alaska and coast to coast.  This is a huge undertaking and we are setting systems to personally record, learn, share, and most important, practice these values as we grow. By understanding the food, culture, history, and technique of the  first peoples of North America, we will redefine for the future what truly identifies American, Canadian, and Mexican foods by understanding its very roots.
